Beer Gardens Galore!

Happy Hour Series

12 Weeks. 6 Beer Gardens. Endless Good Times. 1 Missing from the list but... come July 4th, there will be a Beer garden at Independence Mall!
Chef/restaurateur Michael Schulson has secured a deal with the owners of One South Independence Mall West - the landmark Rohm & Haas building and now the home of Dow Chemical at Sixth and Market Streets - to create an outdoor beer garden across from the Liberty Bell.
Schulson, who owns Sampan, The Saint James, and Atlantic City's Izakaya, will control a staggering 30,000 square feet around the building as Independence Beer Garden, which they hope to open July 4. Plan is to run it seven months a year.
The proposed beer garden at Independence Mall would seat up to 400. Before it happens, the planners will have to clear numerous hurdles.
Food from chef Travis Masar (a contestant on Top Chef Season 11) will be grilled outside and offered self-service from stationary food trucks.  Masar told me the menu will be "all-American. ... Almost down-home comfort food, but some healthful items, too." They'll do cheese curds instead of mozzarella sticks.
Groundswell's David Fierabend said pergolas and trees would be erected in what is now a garden area along the building's Sixth Street frontage, with seating. A tent will be erected on the Ranstead Street side.
Schulson also promises outdoor sports and games, such as shuffleboard.
The Summer of the Beer Garden
It’s beer garden season in Philadelphia, one of our favorite times of year.
Beer gardens are the ultimate summertime hangout. Why? For so many reasons. For one, it’s hard to beat hanging outside drinking beer. But actually one of the biggest reasons we love beer gardens so much is their versatility. Think about it. The open-air hangouts are perfect for a night out with friends, a happy hour with coworkers, dinner and drinks with the family or even a daytime hang with kids. And that’s awesome.
Fortunately, Philadelphia has numerous beer gardens for one and all to enjoy. There are the established favorites like Frankford Hall and Morgan’s Pier, as well as new additions and pop-ups like the Spruce Street Harbor Park, The Oval and the PHS Pop-Up Garden.
So whether you’re looking for a litre of draft beer served in an authentic German beer stein (Frankford Hall) or looking to enjoy a local beer in a waterfront hammock garden (Spruce Street Harbor Park), Philadelphia’s beer gardens have you covered.
Introducing The All-New Visit Philly Beer Garden Series
In order to take advantage of Philly’s wealth of awesome beer gardens, we’ve created a brand new rotating happy hour series called the Visit Philly Beer Garden Series. Launching on Friday, June 6 at Morgan’s Pier, and visiting a single beer garden each week through August, the pop-up happy hours will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays and include specials on food and local craft beer.
